In his book In Praise of Congregations Charles Bennison quotes Frederick Buechner’s description about a small congregation he attend during a sabbatical year in Chicago. He started going out of curiosity, but kept going because the congregation possessed “music and magic and power”. “That power kept taking me back Sunday after Sunday. And I remember… that the last time I attended a service there, there we real tears running down my cheeks at the realization that the chances were I would probably never find myself going again.”  Many others have also told stories like this about congregations – who changed their lives.
