Theology in times of transition

theology_transition

Communitas invites you to a very special event. We are planning a conference in 2012 to celebrate the contribution of Coenie Burger. You are invited personally because we know that your road crossed Coenie’s in one way or another and that you are likely to be interested in this occasion.

For many of us Coenie remains instrumental in creating a space for a continuous inclusive conversation, not only on congregational life, but also on a wide range of theological topics. This approach is typical of Coenie’s work and lifestyle. A conversation on various theological topics is never far when Coenie is around! Whether in a formal meeting or enjoying coffee informally, stimulating theological themes pop into the discussions. Conversations with Coenie are always instructive, inclusive and continuous by nature. He has agreed to this occasion on condition that the conference allows not only for reflections on the past, but also for deliberations on the future. Hence the tone will not be exclusively retrospective of his career, but also a space for envisioning the future.

‘n Mensgerigte ekonomie broodnodig vir Suid-Afrika

“Musemgo a nga langutiwi nonweni.”

Hier stem ek saam met Emily Dickenson: “Words are dead when they are said, some say. I say they only begin to live that day.” Hier volg ‘n paar:
  • “You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they don’t have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of a nation.” – Adrian Rogers

The most important question any church planter can ask is “ Why am I planting a church?” I have had some conversations with some great guys lately who I think are really struggling with that question. All of us struggle with why we are in ministry on Monday morning, but we need to evaluate our motivation on a bigger scale.

Let’s look at what I think are some lousy reasons to plant a church and then share a great reason I recently heard.

First the lousy reasons:

“I want to reinvent church”

This one comes in a lot of flavors, but it always comes down to the bottom line, I have a better way to do church. More hymns, no hymns, pews, no pews, more art, more coffee, more beer, less structure, less formality. We’re going to be radically sold out. We’re not going to cater to Christians. We’re going to go deep. We’re going to go wide. We’re going to be a church for people who absolutely abhor the awful church that I’m currently drawing my paycheck from.

Bid iemand ooit vir my?
